Turnstar Goes For Goal for Host Venue Stadiums - Confederations Cup 2009

Turnstiles installed at the recently renamed Coca Cola Park (formerly Ellis Park) in Johannesburg

Turnstar has recently manufactured and supplied all 275 turnstiles required for the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup. The tournament was held during June 2009 at four venues around South Africa and was considered a great success.

Coca Cola Park (formerly Ellis Park) in Johannesburg, which was the venue for the opening match and the final, used a mix of 40 existing Turnstar TRIUMPH 4 single turnstiles, which were installed approximately 10 years ago and were refurbished for the tournament, and 56 new modified Turnstar TRIUMPH 4 single and double turnstiles. The modifications included a slightly wider walkthrough area and a 180° mechanism rotation setting instead of the standard 90° mechanism rotation setting. All the modifications were made with pedestrian comfort and mass access in mind. 50mm diameter LED indicator lights were also fitted to the turnstiles which indicate whether the turnstile is available for use or if the gate is curently closed. The turnstiles were also fitted with LCD counters in order to count the number of spectators that entered the stadium. Another 5 Turnstar TRIDENT waist height turnstiles were installed for access control to VIP areas.

Turnstiles installed at Loftus Stadium (Gate 1 of 10 shown)

Loftus Stadium in Pretoria/Tshwane, used 32 Turnstar TRIUMPH 4 double turnstiles and 16 Turnstar TRIUMPH 4 single turnstiles all of the same design used at Ellis Park. Another 10 Turnstar TRIDENT waist height turnstiles were installed for access control to VIP areas.

The Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg which is a multipurpose stadium was fitted with 25 Turnstar TITAN 4 half height double turnstiles. The Royal Bafokeng Stadium was orignally built in 1999 and was then fitted with 56 TRIUMPH 4 turnstiles. The stadium was subsequently refurbished for the Confederations Cup and the World Cup. The architect for the refurbishment had a special vision for the turnstiles at the perimeter and Turnstar made a custom design of the TITAN 4 half height turnstile where the turnstile frame is replaced with precast concrete columns. The rotors of the turnstiles were also manufactured from 304 grade brushed stainless steel.
